Ballymakenny College is a co-educational post-primary community school in Drogheda, established in 2014. It is jointly patroned by Educate Together and the Louth & Meath Education and Training Board and is committed to an inclusive, equality based and learner centred ethos that welcomes students of all backgrounds. The school aims to create a respectful, democratic community where every student’s individuality and potential are supported, both academically and personally.

Aim
To explore line, contrast and emphasis by working in a group to create a lantern using etch printing, while investigating the theme of “Under the Canopy”
Learning Outcomes
2.3 Reflect on their own, or another’s, craftwork through the use of critical and visual language.
2.6 investigate their own personal approach to craftwork through the technical and creative application of drawing and mark-making
2.11 research the use of art elements and design principles in historical and contemporary craftwork from their own and other cultures

3.4 interpret a design brief and represent this through their drawings
Learning Intentions

Explore teamwork by playing “The tallest tree” to build teamworking skills for this unit

Apply different drawing techniques to explore and understand different types of line.

Understand the weight of line to realise its connection to tone

To link to the theme to explore negative and positive space and know how it is necessary in the designs for the prints to work.

Etch design onto the plate, focusing on line weight to create detail and tone when printing

Recognise how correct inking and wiping impacts line, tone, and the balance of positive and negative space in their final print

Collaborate with peers to create a connected three-sided paper lantern,so they show how to combine individual prints

Aim
To learn about art and culture in Pre-christian Ireland through the six elements while exploring the Bronze Age, using critical and creative thinking, while also developing the ability to create visual and written resources for study.

To understand why jewelry became important in the bronze age, and how it was used to express identity and status through material, design and craftsmanship

To experience the repoussé technique by working into gold foil, exploring how Bronze Age craftspeople used tools and pressure to create raised patterns and textures in their artwork
